VR Heads
Panoramic heads are designed to attach onto most standard
tripods. They are used by panographers to take the shots necessary
to create a panoramic movie. Panoramic heads have adjustments
that can be set to click at set increments as the head is rotated
through 360 degrees. As explained in the lens section of this
virtual tour guide, different lenses require different numbers
of shots to complete a full 360 panorama, so panoramic heads
can be adjusted to allow for a variety of different lenses.
Not all panoramic heads are compatible with all cameras and
lenses as they can be all different sizes, shapes and weights.
If you already have a camera suitable for taking panoramas
then contact the VR head manufacturer to ensure the panoramic
head you are thinking of purchasing is suitable for your current
camera and lens combination. Alternatively visit www.panoguide.com
where novices and experts exchange and discuss virtual tour
tips.
If you are purchasing all the equipment at once then there
are any number of combinations to consider. The most important
element to think about (apart from budget of course!) is whether
you wish to shoot multi-row or single-row panoramas. Single-row
heads tend to be cheaper but with this type of head you are
limited to the single-row panoramas. A multi-row head can be
used to take both single and multi-row panoramas.
This guide highly recommends the Manfrotto 303 spherical head.
It is a robust, well engineered and virsitile multi-row head.
